Chapter Fifteen

Chase Riddle knew how to have some snow fun. They’d been at this for an hour—loading three insulated food carriers into the Polaris, delivering them, and then going back to the house for more. There had been a certain amount of whooping and hollering. Bennett had almost turned the vehicle over once, and Chase had fallen off the back twice. This was their last run, which meant Bennett was going to have to go back to that tree house where Hélène-Louise sat with her little bare feet, asking questions about things he didn’t want to think about.

“Sure you don’t want to move up here and go to work for me?” Chase yelled. He was hanging onto the back of the vehicle that Bennett was driving wide open. “Kitty won’t let me stand on the back.”

“I absolutely do want to do that. Make me an offer. It doesn’t have to be much.”

He laughed. “What would Hélène-Louise think of that?”

“Hélène-Louise doesn’t think all that much about me.”

“Uh oh. Up ahead to the right.”

He pulled up by a sign that said Peter Pan’s Hideout. So he’d been right about ol’ Pete. Might be the only thing he’d been right about lately.

“Right back.” Chase grabbed the container and ran up the steps to the tree house like Rocky Balboa on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

When he returned, Chase slid into the seat beside Bennett. “I appreciate this, man. It cuts the time nearly in half when someone else is driving, which Kitty usually does. You’d offered to help, and I hate for Kitty to get out in this weather. She’s cold natured.”

“I understand.” He thought of Hélène-Louise’s wet, cold feet. “I’ll be glad to help you tomorrow. It was fun.”

Chase laughed. “I love my wife and daughter, but I do get a fair dose of estrogen every day. I may take you up on your offer to deliver lunch, but I won’t bother you for breakfast. Some people want to eat at six, others at nine, so it isn’t rushed.”

That was fine since Bennett didn’t relish the thought of getting up that early, but that brought another thought to mind. Where would he be getting up from? There was one bed, which was where Hélène-Louise would be. The little couch was too short, so that left the floor. Oh, well. He’d slept in worse places. At least he wouldn’t wake up with a hangover and sand in his mouth and crotch.

But one thing was sure. He would not be sharing the bed with Hélène-Louise, even if they intended to only sleep. There was no way that would happen. She might be okay with sleeping with two men at the same time, but he wasn’t okay with being one of them. And it would do him well to remember that her intent had been to be with a French-speaking hockey player tonight.

“I guess this is the end of the line.” Bennett pulled up to Bride’s Perch and got out of the vehicle, though considering his last thoughts, he wasn’t all that eager to go in.
